How to choose the right ERP for your business
The criteria that genuinely matter before selecting an ERP — and the ones that waste your time.
ERP comparisons line up hundreds of features. That is exactly what makes the choice hard: nearly every serious product ticks nearly every box. The difference lies elsewhere.
Start from your processes, not the feature list
Describe your five most critical processes first, end to end, including the real exceptions. Exceptions are what expose the gap between a product and your business — a feature list never will.
- What happens on a partial return with a credit note?
- How do you handle a customer who is also a supplier?
- Who approves an exceptional discount, and above what threshold?
The underrated criteria
Data migration quality often matters more than any single feature: a perfect ERP fed doubtful data produces doubtful decisions. Then come genuine API integration capability, and whether support actually exists in your language and time zone.
An ERP is a ten-year decision. The deciding factor is rarely what it does today, but what it will let you connect tomorrow.
Finally, test the product on your own data in a short pilot. A sales demo shows the happy path; a pilot shows what breaks.
